How memory impacts your productivity

When I say memory, what do you think of?  Do you think of a computer chip? The human brain? That song from the musical “Cats”?

There are many different types of memory

When it comes to computer memory, there are two main types, RAM or “Random Access Memory” and Primary Storage Memory.

RAM allows the computer to retain key pieces of information in a way that is quick and easy to access.

Whereas Primary Storage Memory is used to hold much larger amounts of information and takes longer for the computer to access.

Using both, the computer is able to operate efficiently. Without one or the other the computer would not be very useful.

Our brains work in a very similar fashion

Using Short Term Memory and Long Term Memory we’re able to think quickly and remember things for years and years.

To maximize your personal productivity, try using this same strategy when it comes to your task list. Start by adding all your tasks to an unscheduled task list. Think of this as your “Long Term Memory”.

Then select five to eight tasks from that list that need to be done today and move them to your “Daily Task List”. Think of this as your “Short Term Memory”.

Your daily task list should be quick and easy to access.Your unscheduled task should still be accessible but tucked away so that it won’t distract you from your daily task list.

This system will allow you to keep a focus on your immediate needs while retaining all the important information for future tasks.
