It was a great training session! Packed with important information about the new program at work. The trainer was an expert and kept the group focused and, on occasion, laughing. Everyone was anxious to get to work.
Except… over the next few days it was harder and harder to figure out how to implement the day-to-day aspects of the new program. It worked in the PowerPoints during the training session, but now, it felt impossible!
Training has done its job, what’s needed now is coaching!
Although both are effective and useful, there are some differences between training and coaching. Coaching is the bridge that transports people from knowing something to actually doing it.
What happens during training?
During training, the trainer controls the process and the content in order to transfer knowledge or develop a new skill as efficiently as possible. The effectiveness of training depends on the competence of the trainer, and, in a way, the aptitude of the trainee for the subject being taught.
What happens during coaching?
Coaching, on the other hand, is driven by questions addressed to the individual being coached, who then explores what they already know—but in a way that would probably not occur to them without the guidance of a coach. The coach controls the process, but for it to be really effective, the individual has to own the content.
People are often trained in groups, and this doesn’t reduce the quality of the training received in any appreciable way—however, coaching must always be done on a one-to-one basis.
Key points:
Training is about teaching specific skills or knowledge.
Coaching is about helping to improve someone else’s thinking and improving their performance.
Training can be done in groups.
Coaching is a one-to-one process tailored to the individual’s needs.
Coaching sessions after training sessions have a dramatic effect on how the training is adopted into real life.
